Rock Hawk is an archaeological site in Putnam County, Georgia, which consists of thousands of quartzite pieces laid out in the shape of a large bird. Although the bird is usually described as a hawk, scholars are not entirely sure what the original builders intended to depict. The site also features a viewing platform and interpretive center.
Rock Hawk is located 12 miles east of Eatonton, Georgia, on the shores of Lake Oconee and the Wallace Dam. It is accessible via the Wallace Dam Road, which is marked by a large entrance sign. From there, visitors will find a parking area and the attractions.
The archery range is part of the Oconee Wildlife Management Area. The range features two types of targets: static targets and a 3-D trail. The static range is open during daylight hours and features large “bow butt” targets. Broadheads are not allowed at this facility, to minimize the impact on targets.
Visitors can also explore the Rock Eagle 4-H Center, which is situated adjacent to the Oconee National Forest. The center is located on 1,500 acres of forested land and a 110-acre lake. The center was founded in 1955 and is one of five 4-H centers run by the University of Georgia. The Center is a major resource for the Georgia 4-H Program, which reaches thousands of youth each year.
The area is home to many historic sites. A 19th century walled cemetery and an old homestead are located nearby. The Kinchen Little family was one of the original owners of the area and was involved in the construction of Rockville School, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Rock Hawk Effigy is a historic site that dates back to the early Indians. The site is located near the Wallace Dam, and visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the area’s history.
